Reggae Rock News exclusive interview with Grammy nominated Blvk H3ro @ Cali Vibes Marina Green Park 386 Shoreline Drive Long Beach, California 90802
Reggae Rock News;
Hello, welcome to Cali Vibes 2023!
Blvk H3ro;
Hey, what’s going on? What’s going on, Mama? This is my first Cali vibes. I was booked for last year, but, you know, there was, like, it was like, coming off the heels of the pandemic and couldn’t make it I am so happy to be here now.
Reggae Rock News:
When did you arrive?
Blvk H3ro;
I believe that came a day before the event started Thursday February 16, 2023. They were setting up the barricades, you could tell the place was changing all kinds of exciting vibes.
Reggae Rock News:
You have the best vibe, tell us about Blck H3ro.
Blvk H3ro;
My name is Black Hero. I’m from Jamaica, you know, Kingston and me. Well, it says I’m a solo artist, but I do have a band. And basically, we make reggae dancehall music straight from the heart of the rock and we’ve just been touring the States since last year, man, we just came from showbiz at the Grammys because we were just Grammy nominated. The Grammy’s that was just like an amazing energy. And to bring that here at Cali Vibes with the sound system vibes and with my DJ and team, it’s going to be crazy. Oh man, it’s kind of like a dream come true.
Reggae Rock News:
Did you ever imagine playing in front of such a large audience in America at Cali Vibes 2023?
Blvk H3ro;
Not even like, you know, I used to perform in front of mirrors and have my little broom and performing on the broom like it was a mic stand and the singing to the chairs and looking over at my TV and practicing. And now you just see 5000, 10,000, like 40,000 people in front of you. It’s crazy. And we get that experience in Europe a lot. It’s like, you know, at some point it’s going to because you believe in it and you tell yourself, yeah, it’s going to change, it’s going to go. But when it actually happens, you’re like, Oh man, Its great!
Reggae Rock News:
How is like playing in America?
Blvk H3ro;
It’s good because America loves reggae music. It’s like it’s a rebel nation. Reggae artists from Jamaica don’t get that in to see that much in America. So, I give thanks for that and am gratful. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is amazing!

Reggae Rock News:
What is it like playing for a Jamaican audience compared to America?
Blvk H3ro;
It’s a nation that you can’t really tell what to do. You got to hope that they follow the rules they can relate to reggae music because it’s the same energy. It’s raw, it’s uncut, it’s speaking the truth of the times, and everybody can always relate to the truth. In America they really understand, they take in the lyrics, and the audience they try to relate and really listen to the artists. So yeah, America and reggae is just one. Yeah.
Blvk H3ro;
Jamaican audience. Um, I would say the energy is it, it’s similar. It’s not just the music in Jamaica. Like we really go off of energy and vibes, so we move a lot more and tend to listen to the lyrics later.
Whereas the American audience, they kind of just zone in and then afterwards they have a blast. So that’s, that’s, that’s the difference I’ve seen.
Reggae Rock News:
Where did you come up with the name of the band?
Blvk H3ro;
My name really came at a time when I was just, I was just going through the motions of pursuing my dream, my passion, and man, I just thought I wasn’t ready enough. I thought I wasn’t brave enough to pursue this, and then it just became a real dream. It just became a actuality. And then in that moment, I heard a voice and it just said, You’re a hero. While I was crying and everything. And then and I said, No! I’m a black hero because just of what I was consuming at the time. And I mean, like documentaries, movies, music. So that’s just where it came from.
Reggae Rock News:
Are you going to be playing full time? What are your plans?
Blvk H3ro:
Yeah. Bam, bam, Yeah, yeah. For full time, for sure. There’s no other plan Yeah. It’s, it’s all, it’s, it’s up from here. I’ve been touring since June so that’s a lot of time and Cali Vibes is a part of the tour, and I will continue on my touring right after this. I hope to complete one year of touring. I’ve never seen anyone do that from Jamaica, so hopefully I can do that. So that’s the plan to spread the music, share the vibes. We have a new album coming out and the process of doing this and transformed me and the world around me. What’s to come is like a movie.
Reggae Rock News:
How does it feel to play in front of an audience this so large as Cali Vibes?
Blvk H3ro:
Playing the kind of vibes and major festivals such as these made me realize just how far a dream can really take you.
Reggae Rock News:
What was your inspiration to start doing music?
Blvk H3ro:
I think it’s just the I think it’s just the vibration of Jamaica that gets naturally so colorful, correct. Jamaica is amazing it is such a high
It’s like you could come to Jamaica with a camera and shoot a movie every day, literally. It’s like that vibrant energy, colors, sounds, spices, aroma, flavor. It just all soaked into me. And I just let it all out with the music. I feel like being in Jamaica, you’re naturally drawn to the arts.
Reggae Rock News:
What artists do you listen to?
Blvk H3ro:
Oh, that’s a hard question. I listen to everything. My job every day is to discover new music that’s just my life if I don’t have new music, I feel like I get worried. I’m like, Whoa, is it done? Is music finished now? But right now I’m currently listening to a lot of older, like old school music for me at least, because no music is old school but music before my time. I have been listening to a lot of Sam Cooke right now, a lot of Michael Jackson, a lot of ideas of different energies, some Frank Sinatra.I was getting into, Aretha Franklin and Anita Baker the other day. I was just listening to a lot of older music, you know? I mean, a lot of opera too that’s what I’m into right now.
Reggae Rock News:
How do you stay inspired and overcome challenges?
Blvk H3ro:
Yeah. I survived. I think my Nike has the best advertisement slogan for life, which is just do it like we could. You could sit and create all the excuses you want. You can say it was where you’re from. You could say it was your parents’ fault. You can say it was your friend’s fault. You could say it was this. Just do it. And then it would just really work out like, I can’t believe I’m actually saying something as cliche as that, But it’s real and it’s true.
Reggae Rock News:
Just do it?
Blck H3ro:
Yeah, that’s. Yeah, yeah. Just do it and do it.
Reggae Rock News:
Where do you see yourself in your journey?
Blvk H3ro:
Yeah, the ultimate dream and end goal is to be a household name. I feel like being a household name just means you connect to so many people. And if I can do that as a little kid from Waterford in Jamaica, then I feel like that will just literally inspire others like me. Because that’s what happened for me. I look at inspiration almost like the same as a love, like we’re just all passing it around. So, if I saw Michael Jackson do his thing, that inspiration that he saw from James Brown is now passed on to me and somebody is going to see me. And it’s just that’s how you really pass the torch on. It’s the inspiration to make a little child be like, man, I want to do that one day. Like, you know, So that’s my job. Yeah.
Reggae Rock News:
How do you feel when you are performing?
Blvk H3ro:
How does it feel? I mean, it’s like no other drug and you’re performing. It’s like, not even weed makes me that high. Like, all of my senses shoot off. I turn into, like, a mini-Superman.
I can jump high. I don’t feel no pain. I’m not hungry, and I’m just super charged. And especially in the crowd, it gives you back the energy. It’s like tennis. You hit the ball, they hit the ball back and it’s like, damn, the ball just keeps getting bigger. And that’s when we just go crazy. And I mean, so yeah, just it’s like a high like no other.
Reggae Rock News:
Do you have any thoughts to share for others pursuing their own journey?
Blvk H3ro:
To be focused, like in, in a crazy world like this. And, I mean, you really have to really be focused. Look with your eyes with you. Use all of your senses, use all of your might, use all of your abilities as a serious time just be safe.
Reggae Rock News:
Is there anybody you would like to collaboarate with?
Blvk H3ro:
I would like to get in the studio with Stick Figure, The Dirty Heads, and Rebelution tp connect with the genre across all boards.
