One of the most unique modern roots voices in Jamaica Samory I returns today with “Crown,” his brand new song accompanied with a lyric video (directed by Yannick Reid with animation by Solasink and Leopold Matthews).
On “Crown,” Samory I reinforces his Rastafarian philosophies and his militancy towards upholding his beliefs despite societal pressures against him. The song is a renunciation of the Babylon system as well as an assertion of black pride and dignity.
“The inspiration behind ‘Crown’ is about what we see happening on a daily basis,” says Samory I. “People losing themselves, or manipulating their image and their values, for worldly gain and acceptance in society. We remain Rasta no matter how hard the wind blows or the tide rises.”
As far as the musical end of the song, producer Winta James says that “’Crown’ is a hardcore rubadub track that came together pretty quickly during one of our sessions at Tuff Gong Studios. I think Samory’s delivery adds to the overall menace of the riddim. This tune is a proper introduction to the sound of the coming album overall.”
Samory’s career has been on the rise in recent years starting with his debut album Black Gold (2017), a collaboration with Jamaican producer Rory “Stonelove” Gilligan. This LP helped make Samory a household name in the reggae world. Its breakout single “Rasta Nuh Gangsta” is now approaching 10 million views on YouTube alone and other standout tracks are “Black Gold” and “Son of David.” Since then, Samory I has landed features on two Grammy-nominated reggae albums, including Jesse Royal’s Royal (2021) for their collaboration “High Tide or Low” and Protoje’s album Third Time’s The Charm (2022) for the closing track “Heavy Load.” In 2022, Samory I released “Love and Mercy” off the Gratitude Riddim compilation (produced by Winta James), and it became one of his most streamed tracks to date. Later in the year, Samory teamed up with dancehall star Chi Ching Ching for their love of cannabis on “Life Is Amazing” and then closed out the year with his conscientious track “Blood In The Streets.”
Samory I’s latest offering “Crown” is available now on all platforms, and his sophomore album is anticipated to release later this year. Helmed by producer Winta James, the forthcoming LP will be released by James’ Overstand Entertainment in conjunction with Easy Star Records.
