Aston Barrett

Aston "Family Man" Barrett is one of the most important and influential bass guitarists in the history of reggae music. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he became the backbone of Bob Marley & The Wailers as their bassist and musical director, helping to shape the sound of roots reggae and bringing it to global audiences. His deep, melodic bass lines are among the most recognizable in popular music.

Barrett began his musical career in the late 1960s, forming the Barrett Brothers rhythm section with his brother Carlton on drums. The duo became the house rhythm section for Lee "Scratch" Perry's Upsetter label before joining Bob Marley & The Wailers, where they would remain for the rest of Marley's life. Aston's bass work on landmark albums like "Catch a Fire," "Burnin'," "Natty Dread," "Rastaman Vibration," and "Exodus" helped define the sound of roots reggae for generations.

As musical director of the Wailers, Barrett was instrumental in arranging and developing the band's sound, bridging the gap between Jamaican roots traditions and international rock and pop influences. After Bob Marley's passing in 1981, he continued to lead the Wailers, keeping the band active and touring for decades. Aston Barrett passed away in February 2024, leaving behind a musical legacy that is truly immeasurable.
