Alton Ellis

Alton Ellis, born Alton Nehemiah Ellis in Kingston, Jamaica, was one of the most gifted and beloved vocalists in the history of Jamaican music. Known as the "Godfather of Rocksteady," he played a pivotal role in the transition from ska to rocksteady in the mid-1960s, and his smooth, soulful voice became one of the defining sounds of that era. His influence on Jamaican music — and on the artists who followed him — is immeasurable.

Ellis began his career in the late 1950s, recording for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label and quickly establishing himself as one of Jamaica's finest vocalists. His 1967 hit "Rock Steady" is widely credited with giving the rocksteady genre its name, and songs like "Girl I've Got a Date," "Willow Tree," and "I'm Still in Love with You" became enduring classics of Jamaican popular music.
