Biography

Althea Forrest and Donna Reid, known together as Althea & Donna, were a Jamaican reggae duo who achieved international fame with their 1977 hit "Uptown Top Ranking." The song, which was produced by Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, reached number one in the UK charts in February 1978, making Althea and Donna the youngest artists to top the UK singles chart at the time.

"Uptown Top Ranking" was a playful, upbeat track that celebrated female independence and style, delivered in a light-hearted patois over a classic reggae riddim. Its infectious energy and witty lyrics captured the imagination of audiences far beyond Jamaica, and the song became one of the defining reggae hits of the late 1970s. The duo's fresh, youthful approach brought a new dimension to the Jamaican music scene.

Although Althea & Donna's recording career was relatively brief, their impact on reggae history is significant. "Uptown Top Ranking" remains one of the most beloved and recognizable reggae songs ever recorded, and it continues to be celebrated as a landmark moment in both Jamaican music and UK chart history. The song has been covered and sampled by numerous artists over the decades.
